How to verify an Alibaba supplier before you pay
To verify an Alibaba supplier you check the badges, the company papers, the transaction history, a live video call and a paid sample, and you keep every payment inside the platform. Alibaba is where most importers find genuine factories, but it is also where a small number of scam patterns repeat.
Quick answer
- To verify an Alibaba supplier, look for the Verified Supplier badge, read the real transaction history, check the business licence against the bank account name, ask for a live video call and order a paid sample.
- Pay only through Alibaba's own payment system so Trade Assurance protection applies.
The five checks to verify an Alibaba supplier
- 1
Check the badges and the history
Look for Verified Supplier and read the transaction history and buyer reviews, not only the star rating.
- 2
Match the papers to the payment
Ask for the business licence and check that its name matches the account you would pay.
- 3
Ask for a live video call
Request a live call of the factory floor, not pre-recorded footage. A supplier who refuses or turns evasive is a serious warning sign.
- 4
Order a paid sample
Inspect the sample against your written specification, and keep it as your reference if the bulk order differs.
- 5
Consider an independent audit
For larger or repeat orders, an inspection company can visit the factory, confirm it is real and report back. It costs money, but far less than a failed container.
What the badges do and do not mean
| Badge | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Verified Supplier | An independent third party checked the licence, ownership and factory location. | It does not guarantee your order will be handled honestly. |
| Trade Assurance | Your payment is held and released only when you confirm the order meets the agreed terms. | It only protects payments made through it. |
The scams to know
- The deposit that disappears: an attractive quote, a request for a wire transfer outside the platform to start production, then silence.
- Bait and switch: a perfect sample, then a bulk shipment of lower quality and a refused refund.
- The fake factory front: a trading company using stolen photos and borrowed certificates as if it were the maker.
- The clone site: a copy of a real supplier's profile on a lookalike website, with payment redirected to the fraudster.
- The design trap: a supplier you paid to develop a custom design later sells it to your competitors.
A request to pay outside Alibaba, by private wire or a link sent in chat, is the single most common step before a scam. Check you are on the real alibaba.com address before you enter payment details.
Frequently asked questions
Is Verified Supplier enough to trust a supplier?
No. It confirms the company is real, not that your particular order will be handled well. Still do the video call, the sample and the payment protection checks.
What is Trade Assurance?
It is Alibaba's payment protection. The money you pay through it is held by the platform and released once you confirm the order meets the agreed terms. It only covers payments made through the platform.
What should I do if a supplier asks me to pay by bank transfer?
Do not send it. Keep the payment inside the platform. A supplier who insists on a private transfer to get the best price is asking you to give up your protection.
